Hard Gelatin Capsules

Hard gelatin capsules are typically filled with simple powder blends of API with excipients, or by granules prepared by Wet or Dry Granulation. Because there is no need to form a hard compact, there is no need to use excipients with high compactibility. Instead cohesive blends of simple excipients are frequently used. An exception is the ability to use anhydrous lactose (SuperTab® 21AN) which forms cohesive plugs of powder even under the low forces employed by capsule machines.

Superdisintegrants are often recommended to improve dissolution of drugs from hard gelatine capsules.

Recommended excipients:
» SuperTab® 21AN anhydrous lactose
» Pharmatose® Sieved
» Primojel® (sodium starch glycolate)
» Primellose® (croscarmellose sodium)
» Prejel PA5 PH (pregelatinized starch)
» Solani Amylum (potato starch)
